Movie Review by Manish
So now that Shaad Ali has two back to back hits under his belt before this one (Saathiya and Bunty aur Bubli), he had to let the law of averages catch up with him. After all scoring a hat-trick requires some mettle, some luck and some panache. Sorry Shaad, you missed your hat-trick in my books. If Jhoom Barabar Jhoom (JBJ) still goes on to score a hit (I am quite sure it won't), then you certainly have some luck.
JBJ boasts of a big star cast, foreign locales and some of the biggest names in the industry. Alas, thats where it all ends. The movie fails to hold your attention. At one point you are left wondering "Why did I ever think of watching this Move". Whether its the slew of bad words, or the cute punjabi, they make you smile, but more often then not you smile because "Hey you didn't come to watch JBJ because you would tear your hair apart, you came to enjoy a movie, so what the hell, the actors are trying to make you smile, smile".
The movie starts of with the Big B dancing with a foreign troupe, in his rockstar outfit. He holds his own alrite, throughout the movie. But if you really think he will carry the movie on his shoulders because of his performance, then you are better advised to watch Cheeni Kum.
Maybe the father-son duo was lucky for Shaad last time on (in Bunty Aur Babli), so he paired them again.
Abhishek and Bobby are good throughout the movie, but nothing you would write home about. Preity is also quite ordinary as Alvira Khan (A Pakistani from Lahore). She tries hard to fake an accent but cannot sustain it thoughout the movie. In fact the boring conversation between Preity and Abhishek (which runs through the entire first half) has her trying to ingrain the royal brit accent in her dialogue delivery. She isn't able to sustain it. On the other hand Lara Dutta is in her elements. Phenomenal performance by Lara. As a french women, she seems like she is a natural. Don't be surprised if you hear Lara acting in a french film really soon. Lara Dutta is the surprise package of the movie, she looks hot and plays a role with so much variety. Whats more she does complete justice to the different characters she plays.
Bobby also does a great job with his looks, sporting curly blonde hair, he looks quite dashing throughout the movie, but indeed quite stupid trying to enact his father (Dharmendra) with the songe "Ye Dosti".
The editing and the screenplay is satisfactory at most times. One sure does wonder why pot-shots at Princess Diana were taken in the movie. Most of the songs seemed forced and are do not gel with the story. So if you really must watch this movie, leave your brain behind at home. If you have a Punjabi friend along with you, then even better, Bobby Deol does a wonderful act in Punjabi.
All in all, watchable film, just watch with an open mind, otherwise you might come back with a spinning head and the ring of "Ghoom Barabar Ghoom Barabar, GhooooM" in your ears.
