People, we know how abso-freaking-lutely tough it is to get a good night’s sleep without hectic schedules. Ever demanding corporate jobs, family commitments, running a household, catching up with friends- all this leaves us with really fewer hours to sleep. Don’t you wish there were more than 24 hours in a day just so that you could sleep more? Ha! But on a serious note, we all underestimate the importance of a good night’s sleep in our daily lives. So we got in touch with a wellness coach, Tapasya Mundhra, to discuss sleep-related issues in today’s urban age. Read on!

What is the ideal time to go to bed? And how much sleep is required in general?

A good undisturbed 7 to 8 hours of sleep is a must, and while many of us don’t get nearly that much but still you should try. It will not only keep your fresh and energized but is also good for your skin and overall health.

People in hectic corporate jobs work till late night and often complain of not getting enough sleep. How can they fix it?

Adequate sleep is essential to all humans, especially people with hectic jobs as it affects their performance at work as well as takes a toll on their body. Such people should take power naps whenever possible. A power nap of 10 to 30 minutes during the afternoon ensures a good sleep at night.

Similarly for young kids, they are on their phones all day and all night! And as a result don’t get enough sleep. How does it affect young people?

Children are exposed so much to social media these days! No laptop and phone policy on the bed at night should be followed for better sleeping routines for young kids. Also, slow paced music helps and improves both sleep quality and duration.

What are the main causes of sleep disorders in today’s time?

Too much stress, unnecessary thinking, lack of activities, too much television and caffeine consumption are the main causes of sleep disorders in today’s era. Tossing and turning all night is also a symptom of a sleep disorder. One must not ignore if you are ecperiencing that.

Do our eating habits affect the ability to sleep? How are the two related?

Yes, it does, if you stuff yourself too much before sleeping, you won’t get a sound sleep. Likewise, the use of caffeine and alcohol is also not good before bed. Consume light food at least 2 to 3 hours prior to sleeping and if still hungry have a warm cup of milk before sleeping.

What lifestyle changes can be brought so that people get enough sleep?

Eating balanced food, doing exercise and avoiding gadgets during bedtime are the changes we should definitely try in our lifestyle for better sleep routine. Exercises like aerobics will surely help to improve your sleep quality in people who suffer from insomnia.

What is your take on sleep medication if someone isn’t getting enough sleep?

For the sleep medication, you should definitely consult your doctor. According to your body problems and patterns, the right medication will effectively work for sleep pattern. But please remember DO NOT self medicate under any circumstances.
