All About Keibul Lamjao National Park

Located in Bishnupur district in the North-Eastern state of Manipur, the National Park is located on the famous Loktak Lake, which is also the largest freshwater lake in the area. It is known for its circular floating swamps called phumdis in the local language. Phumdis are basically a collection of a mass of decaying vegetation which is partly submerged in water and partly floats above it. Most of these phumdis are owned by the state while some are left for private use and then some for tribal communities for taking care of their source of livelihood like fishing.

Home to The Endangered Sangai or Brow-Antlered Deer

The Park was declared a National Park in 1977 to save the endangered species of Sangai, or brow-antlered deer residing here. There’s, in fact, the country’s only ‘floating’ elementary school near the National Park!

Aquatic Plants, Birds And Animals

The lake is home to more than 100 species of birds, 233 species of aquatic plants, and 425 species of animals. The Park is also known to be a ‘birder’s paradise’! Most commonly sighted birds include East Himalayan pied kingfisher, threatened hooded crane, crimson-breasted pied woodpecker and more.

Now that we have given you all the deets about this stunning place in Manipur, you should visit here for sure. In fact, November and March offer unusual sightings of migratory birds too.
