This game of cards dates back to the late 15th century during the Franco-Italian War and was called “Baccara” which means zero. It is believed that Felix Falguieren, an Italian gambler, was the father of the baccarat game. He used to play the game using tarot cards.
In Italy, the game was called “Baccarat en Banque”, while in France it was called “Chemin de Fer” as the cards were dealt from an iron box. It is said that in the game of Baccarat, the house edge is only 1.09%. Since it is a guessing game, one of only three outcomes are possible: either the player wins, the dealer wins, or there is a tie between them.
In the game, two hands of cards are dealt with between the players and the dealer. Whichever hand comes closer to 9, wins the game. The player can either bet one or on both hands against the dealer. If the player’s total comes to nine, then they win, else the casino wins.
Baccarat Game Rules
To win, it all comes down to your betting positions in baccarat game. There is no guarantee that you will always win. So while playing Baccarat, you must keep a few things in mind.
- Any card with Tens, Jacks, Queens and Kings will be counted as a 0.
- Only the last digit of the total of the cards is counted. So for example, if you get two cards, say 7 and 5, then the total will be 12. But according to the rules of baccarat, it will be counted as 2 which means you will need to draw another card, and if it is a 6 or a 7, then the player’s card total will be an 8 or 9 and they win the game, accordingly.
But if you have a king, an 8, and a 6, the total of the three cards will be 14, which will be counted as a 4. This will be a losing hand. Any card set containing a 7 and a 3 will be counted as a 0, or Baccarat, which will again be a losing hand until your opponent draws the winning card.

Though the game is extremely simple, there are some rules that may help you improve your chances of winning the hand and turning your luck around.
- The first and foremost rule of the game is that you need to draw the cards the hand value of which totals 9 if you want to win the game.
- The next rule is that you have only three betting options. You can either guess and win if the Player’s hand matches your bet, or you can also bet on the Banker’s hand or if there is a tie. In the last condition, nobody loses and each gets one point.
- At the start of the game, both the player and the dealer are given only two cards, but as the game progresses, a third card is drawn if the total of both cards of players and dealers are nowhere near 9.
- The third card is dealt with based on the gaming software that automatically deals with the third card to the participating players if required.
- You must also keep in mind that any face cards and tens will be counted as zero, while Aces are counted as 1. The rest of the cards are equal to their face value.
- Also, only the last digit that you get after adding the face value of two cards is counted, say, for example, if you get two cards of 7, their total will be 14, which means the face value will be 4.
