In the year 1929-1945, Okunoshima Island was the site of Japan’s secret chemical-weapons production during World War II. This is where the army produced poison gas weapons which were tested on the rabbits back then. Finally, when the war came to an end, the surviving rabbits were set loose.

And since then, this island has become a home to the bunnies. But don’t worry, the rabbits in today’s age are not affected by chemical warfare from the past. While there are theories like some school children got these rabbits to the island or they are descendants of the older rabbits, the fact remains that these rabbits are friendly and love getting treats from visitors!
