Guest Review by Manish.

Don’t be fooled by the category this film belongs to -”Drama”. There is nothing dramatic about Delhii Heights. When I first read about Delhii Heights, I thought it would be some sort of murder mystery related to a group of individuals residing in a posh high rise in Delhi. Probably if Anand Kumar had thought on those lines, the movie would have still made an impression.

The movie struts on different paths. At one time, it seems like you are watching a stripped down version of “Corporate”, while at another time it seems like you are watching a Rabii Shergill music video. Delhii Heights just fails to hold your attention. Maybe it’s because of the lackluster performances by the lead pair Jimmy Shergill (as Abheer) and Neha Dhupia (as Suhana) or maybe it’s because of the rubbish jokes which Jimmy Shergill tries to crack from time to time.

The movie revolves around Abheer and Suhana, who are a power couple working in rival companies. Don’t ask me what companies or what is their job profile, I can only presume they are brand managers who design campaigns for the brands owned by their companies. Again if I have to make a guess on that after watching the movie for 2 hrs, you can imagine how clearly this information is given out. So anyways, Abheer and Suhana get married and the work pressure takes it’s toll on marital bliss. Add to this the fact that they are star performers in their respective companies which are rivals of each other. As expected their married life suffers. How they overcome their trials and tribulations, to reconcile their differences is what the movie is about.

Rohit Roy(‘Bobby’) and Simone Singh(‘Saima’) play the other couple whose marriage is on the rocks, because Rohit (“Bobby”) is a compulsive flirt. How Saima works through that and turns Bobby over a new leaf is another plot which has it’s significance (or insignificance as you perceive). Isn’t it beginning to sound like Salaam-E-Ishq ?

Om Puri and Vivek Shauq provide the comedy relief to the tale. Om Puri as a ‘Sardarji’, Timmy Kohli gives a good performance and I believe is the only reason why this movie as an additional star. However acting in such a movie belittles the caliber of an actor of his class.

So unless you are a die hard delhite, who’s eager to see the various hotspots of delhi on film you can give Delhii Heights a miss. Maybe catch “Khanna and Iyer” at DT Cinemas, which is another movie which released this week.

The Brighter Side Of Women We Love to Hate

March 29, 2007 by krisdhingra

Saddam Hussein, Adolf Hitler and Osama Bin Laden. What is it that comes to your mind when you first hear these names ? Hate, anger and even more hate. These men are examples of very wise and intelligent people who used their intellect to bring harm to others.Their names would always be found in the annals of history as the super villians of our time.

Now name 3 women half as evil as the guys above. Not easy, even great historians would take a while to answer this question. Simply because women were never meant to be evil or to be hated. In India however, there are quite a few examples of famous women whom the public loves to hate. Some are these women are dumb, some are funny and some make content that everyone watches but no one likes. So who are these women and would you like to be in their shoes. Well we thought that most women would not, but apparently we were proven wrong.

When DelhiPlanet posed this question to a urban, young and smart female she gave us a completely different perspective, catch the conversation below.

DP(DelhiPlanet): So Mam, Tell Us would you like to be Ekta Kapoor. She makes horrible T.V Soaps, degrades women and uses all the tricks in the book to waste our time.

SF(Smart Female): Well why not, she is the soap queen and a multi millionaire. She is certainly one of the most powerful women in the country and her company employs so many people. So what if she makes bad shows, her shows have been running for a decade now and she has managed retain her audience for so many years. That’s quite an achievement, I would love to be in her shoes.

DP: I see, what about Rakhi Sawant. Would you want to be like her ?

SF: Sure why not, she gets so much money, fame and adulation for talking senseless stuff. She doesn’t need to work too hard and overall she can make people laugh just by opening her mouth. No matter how she may act, she’s very confident and not scared of displaying her talents.

DP: Isn’t there some sarcasm in your answers !!

SF: No, there isn’t. I am just giving you my reasons for being Rakhi Sawant,Ekta Kapoor etc.

DP: Alrite, how about Rabri Devi. Do you think one would like to be in her position.

SF: Well Rabri Devi was the chief minister of bihar for quite some time, everyone does not get to be the chief minister of a huge state like Bihar. Plus Laloo is her husband, he’s the guy who’s the talk of the country these days. He has single handedly turned around the fortunes of the Indian Railways and what’s more he lectures the brightest brains in the world. Students from wharton and harvard come to listen to his talks on management. To be the wife of such a person would make me feel very proud and satisfied.

While we had a few more people in our mind we knew that this female was one hell of an optimist, so there was no point of probing further(maybe she would be the right person to replace Greg Chappel as the Indian Coach). So the next time someone tries to taunt you with these names, you know how to get back.

The Web Song

March 27, 2007 by krisdhingra

In today’s day and age it has become almost mandatory for everything to have a theme song associated with it. Whether it be the Cricket World Cup, the Indian Cricket Team (there were atleast a dozen songs for them but it hardly made a difference), a t.v show, an organization or even an educational institution. So it’s a little hard to imagine why there isn’t a single song dedicated to the internet, now better known as the web.

The web has seen huge growth over the past 5 years and the next version known as web 2.0 is what we all use today although it is still in a nascent stage. So while you must have read a lot of stuff at DelhiPlanet, now it’s time for you to sing along. So here we go an amateur attempt at writing a song dedicated to the web. We begin with an image that potrays the essence of the song.

Spiders and Webs

The Web Song

SpiderMan keeps spinning it around,
Google can’t stop crawling down,
You wanna surf it in very town,
With the Web today, there aint’ no frown.

Built from scratch by Master Lee,
It’s surfed daily by you and me,
It’s been around for so long,
Guys like these make it strong.

’00 saw it boom,
in ’01 it went thru doom,
Brin and Page then saw it thru,
And give us all Web 2.

Blogging,sharing,ajax and more
Now is the time for you to score.
The web today gives you the power,
to go out there and become a star.

Well we are quite eager to know about how you liked this attempt, do drop in your comments for the first ever song written for the web. By the way if the word web 2.0 still confuses you, then you should checkout the video below.

DP Money Watch – Look Out for Nahar Spinning

March 26, 2007 by Ashok

After remaining suspended on BSE and NSE for about 2 months because of demerger and financial re-engineering, Nahar Spinning Mills started trading on Friday the 23rd March, 2007.The share saw huge selling on first day and was frozen at the lower circuit @ Rs. 149.

Looking at the fundamentals of the company it has a Equity capital of Rs.18 crores, 3.6 crore shares of FV(Face Value) Rs.5, expected turnover of Rs. 1000 crore+ for FY-07 and Rs.1250 crores for FY-08 and PAT of Rs.100 crores and Rs.125 crores for FY-07 and FY-08 respectively, the share is available at P/E of less than 5. Its very much underpriced and one can take a position in this stock for short and long term. In the long term company is expected to come out with a scheme of demerging the huge land bank that the company is having and giving the shares of this co tentatively named as Nahar Realty to its shareholders. This will unlock the shareholders value and take the company’s share to dizzy heights just like Bombay Dyeing.

Delhi Planet Weekend Trivia – 2

March 24, 2007 by krisdhingra

After the relative success of the First Weekend Trivia we are back again with another teaser to tickle those neurons of yours. So here we go,

Once again, Connect the 3 pictures below and tell us what is common between them.

The answer as correctly pointed out by Arun(check comment) is etchings on microprocessors and the correct term is Chip Art. The first picture is that of a Hewlett-Packard integrated circuit featuring this tiny silicon rendition of a Pepsi commercial as a tribute to the original pepsi cola bottle. Back then 12 ounces of pepsi used to cost only a nickel. The arrow in the picture, difficult to read at this magnification, contains the text: “Look for the Trade Mark“, and the bottom of the label reads: “Healthful” and “Refreshing“.

The second picture that of a California license plate was found on the MIPS R12000 microprocessor. The date on this license plate is July 1997, the month and year that the mask was designed. Note the nice detail present on the palm trees and the California sunset located between the last two “0′s” of the number on the license plate. The last and most popular one, the playboy bunny, was discovered on an integrated circuit made in Germany by Siemens.

Chip Art or Chip masks, apart from being very creative works of art also serve another very important purpose. No two chips belonging to different manufacturers can have the same chip art on them.If the same design and pattern is found on another chip then it tantamounts to copyright infringement and the manufacturer can be sued.

So next time before you upgrade your pc, you might want to delve into the chips in your system and take a closer look.

WC 2007 – If History Repeats Itself, Then The Cup is Ours

March 22, 2007 by krisdhingra

India down in the dumps, Sack Dravid, Sack all the players. India’s shock defeat to Bangladesh evoked strong reactions across the country as this outcome was certainly not expected. The Indian team has a lot of money riding on them and not too forget the expectations of hysterical fans for whom cricket is a like a religion. The good show against Bermuda has lifted our spirits a bit and we all hope and pray that India would defeat Sri Lanka in the crucial match on Friday. This time it’s really important that Rama beats Ravana.

Now it’s hard to know whom the gods favor, but one thing is for certain that history is on our side and if it repeats itself this time then the team of ’83 would definetly get some company.

Bring Home the Cup

How you might ask, well here’s what makes us think so ;

Fact 1
Year 1981
1. Prince Charles got married
2. Liverpool crowned Champions of Europe
3. Australia lost the Ashes

2 years later India won the world Cup!!!

Year 2005
1. Prince Charles got married
2. Liverpool crowned Champions of Europe
3. Australia lost the Ashes

2 years later will India win the world Cup ?????

Fact 2
1982 Football World Cup won by Italy
1983 Cricket World Cup won by India

2006 Football World Cup won by Italy
2007 Cricket World Cup: INDIA ???

If one brings the science of numerology into play then another interesting observation is that the Indian Team has with them the 3,6,9 effect. As per numerology the sequence of 3,6,9 is very lucky and whenever this sequence comes into force for an individual/group then all their desires are fulfilled. India possesses this sequence because it gained Independence in 1947(1+9+4+7 = 21, 2+1=3). 2007 is the 60th(6+0=6) year of it’s independence and 2007 adds up to 9. So this year should be a lucky year for India.

Well if Indian cricket is all about being optimistic, then this is as optimistic as you can get. So here’s wishing our men in blue all the very best for the crucial encounter against Sri Lanka and the rest of the tournament.

India's Searching Them

What’s India Been Searching, Welcome to the inaugral post of this monthly feature where DelhiPlanet would analyze the top 10 keywords that India has been searching. So here it is, the top 10 countdown for the month of February, 2007. (also visible in the image)

10. Katrina Kaif
The leggy beauty and sallu’s girl was in the news for, well you guessed it right her legs. Apparently Miss.Kaif angered the Indian Muslim Community while shooting for a scene of her upcoming film Namaste London. Miss. Kaif had visited the famous Dargah Shariff in Ajmer while shooting for a scene and wore a skirt that did not cover her legs completely. The member’s of the dargah board took strong objection to this because exposure of any part of a female body is considered against islamic laws.

9. Salman Khan
Well he doesn’t really need a reason to be in the news, offlate he’s been interacting with the press a lot more and so we keep hearing about him. Maybe being Miss.Kaif’s boyfriend also lead to his being searched a lot.

8. NDTV
Prannoy Roy’s news television network has gradually become the leading news television network in the country and is probably also the most watched. A fact not known to most people, Prannoy Roy is the cousin to award winning novelist Arundhati Roy.

7.AirTel
Sunil Mittal’s AirTel slashed domestic mobile roaming tariffs and scrapped the rental for roaming services, in line with telecom regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s guidelines. This along with it’s plans to get into retail partnering with global giant walmart propels the telecom company to the number 7 spot.

6.Aishwarya Rai
At number six we have the indian who needs no introduction. February, 2007 was abuzz with news of Ash and Abhishek. It was finally confirmed that they are an item and the media across the country went crazy. Latest reports suggest that they are gonna get married on April 18. Well fans of ash seem to be gearing up for the event too and have launched an exclusive website for the same, it’s called Aishwarya Wedding.

5.Air Deccan
Air Deccan is one of the sources of cheap airline tickets in India and even though most people dislike the flight experience it continues to be one of the most commonly searched keywords.

4. Flowers
February is also known as the Valentine Month, so understandably flowers has to be one of the most searched words. Although DelhiPlanet couldn’t find it’s valentine on V-Day, but we still did an analysis of the boom in the business of retailers and especially flower sellers on Valentine’s Day. See here to check out the post.

3 Sania Mirza
Sania Mirza was in the news in early feb when she reached the semi-finals of the pattaya open and later on when she hurt her knee. Her knee injury is currently keeping her out of action and we wish her a speedy recovery.

2. Cricket
It’s what the country is talking about right now, and isn’t it getting really exciting. February saw more and more people searching the net for information on the ICC Cricket World Cup. Many people started blogging only about cricket and some guys even thought of setting up social network exclusively for cricket (It’s called letscricket). Expect cricket to be at the top of the charts next month.

1.Indian Railways
At Number 1, it’s Laloo Prasad Yadav’s ministry which he’s turned around in a miraculous fashion over the past few years. The Indian Railways is the world’s largest commercial employer with more than 1.6 million employees and is one of the busiest rail networks in the world. February, 2007 saw the this enterprise in the news for 2 main reasons. Starting with the Samjhauta Express Bombings which saw many people lose their lives and impact the peace process between India and Pakistan. The Rail Budget which came towards the end of february acted as the main trigger for it to be looked up the most.

So the Indian Railways is what most of India seached for in Februray,2007. Wanna know what the country’s searching this month, stay tuned to DelhiPlanet.

DP Breaking News : Bob Woolmer is No More

March 19, 2007 by krisdhingra

In News just in Bob Woolmer the coach of the Pakistani Cricket Team passed away at a hospital in Jamaica. As per reports from Reuters and The International Herald Tribune , woolmer was found unconscious in his hotel room and was taken to the emergency ward for medical attention. Woolmer(58) who was born in Kanpur,India was one of the best cricket coaches and had in the past coached South Africa turning it into the world class team that it is today. He had also played for England from 1972 to 1976.

The turn of events in the cricket world over the past few days have been really shocking, starting with India’s Loss to Bangladesh, Pakistan’s Loss to Ireland and now this. The circumstances in which woolmer has passed away are very questionable and it remains to be seen what led to his sudden demise.

DelhiPlanet would like to pay it’s tribute to Bob Woolmer and his entire family. We also request the media and all cricket fans not to be fanatical about the sport as it puts great stress and pressure on the players, coaches and their families. Cricket is just a game and not war, let’s treat it like a sport without attaching one’s personal honour and pride to the results of matches.

300 – Being Mighty Ain’t Enough

March 17, 2007 by krisdhingra

300

IMDB

Year: 2007

Writer: Frank Miller

Director: Zack Snyder

Length: 117 min

Category: War

Media: Film

Studio: Warner Bros

Rating from CBFC: A

Rating: 4 out of 5

Movie Experience:

Remember J.P Dutta’s Border, the movie based on the Battle of Longewala where a battalion of 120 soldiers held back a 3000 troop strong Pakistani force. The stiff resistance of those 120 troops delayed the pakistani assault till dawn, thereby allowing the Indian Air Force to come in and annihilate the pakistani army.

Zack Snyder’s 300, adapted directly from Frank Miller’s comic novel of the same name is somewhat similar. Only this time instead of 120 there are 300 soldiers who hold back atleast 100,000 persian mercenaries. So history does repeat itself, as is evident from the comparision above.

300 is a story about the Battle of Thermopylae and the persian invasion of Greece under Xerxes 1. Xerxes desiring to expand his empire across the whole of europe, asks the greek countries and kingdoms to surrender but his offer is refused by Sparta and it’s King Leonidas. Enraged by the refusal and the killing of his messengers Xerxes invades greece during their festival period with his massive army. Leonidas unable to gather support from his parliament to fight the persians, sets of alone with 300 of his finest soldiers to fight a battle he knows he can’t win. Leonidas and his men hold back the persians for 3 days and inflict heavy losses but are defeated due to treachery on the part of a fellow spartan. The extraordinary courage shown by the king and his men, inspires the whole of greece to come together and defeat the mighty persian army.

300 is a one of it’s kind movie, where computer animation and graphics have been extensively been used to give it a comic book feel. The film was completely shot indoors on blue screen and everything that you see on screen is computer animation. Here’s an example, the picture on top is what was shot and at the bottom is what you would see.

Although this attempt does manage to create a surreal effect, but it is also the minus point of the film as a keen observer can easily make out that everything that he sees is fake. Besides that, 300 is great movie to watch provided you don’t mind seeing bloodshed, human carcasses, decapitation and sliced heads flying in the air. Like most hollywood films the acting is exemplary, and Gerard Butler does a brillant job as King Leonidas. The fight sequences are brillantly executed and the movie is well paced out too.

All in all a must watch and great entertainment.
