These are tough times in the world’s financial markets and just like the employees of Lehman, Merill Lynch and AIG have found out things can change drastically in a very short time. In such times it’s interesting to see the reaction and response of people all over the world especially those who work in unrelated industries.
The Fifty/50 Restaurant in Chicago for instance is hoping to give the employees of these companies a break. Apparently the bar is offering a half-off bar and restaurant tab for anyone who can prove they work or worked for AIG or Lehman Brothers. “Everybody is freaking out. We wanted to do something to make their day a little better,” said Scott Weiner, co-owner of The Fifty/50 restaurant. Lehman’s parent company filed for bankruptcy this week and AIG was bailed out by the U.S. government. In addition to job losses, the former’s stock traded for pennies while the latter was below $5 a share.
The offer is good Sunday through Thursday until October at the restaurant west of downtown Chicago. Weiner said 20 or 30 people, many of whom he had gotten to know while managing another restaurant frequented by employees of the financial companies, had already accepted the half-price discount (Source).
Well, it surely helps to unwind with a couple of beers while job hunting and such things can really help to overcome the depressed mood of an unstable economy.

What is it about the United States Of America, better known as the US of A that all Indians are always eager to experience life as it happens there. Well, the reasons really vary from one person to another and even though the US is a multi-cultural and diverse country not everyone who goes there would like it too much.
Irrespective of where you come from in India your first visit to the US would surely make you observe new things about the way people go about there lives there. Let’s take a look at a few of these
- The Customer Is King: Good Customer Service is a very essential in America. Customer service standards are very high as there are big penalties associated with poor customer service. So if you visit a restaurant and don’t like the food that is served, you can speak to the manager and you can rest assure that he would do something about it. India is also moving towards this trend gradually but it’s still a long way away from the US.
- The Weather Is A Big Deal: If you thought that the weather in India is unpredictable then you were seriously mistaken. In the United States, it could be warm and cosy on one day and cold and rainy on another. The climate variations here quite extreme as a result of which most people constantly update themselves with the weather forecasts for the day and the week. Another thing that is different in the US is that the weather predictions turn out to be true most of the times, unlike India.
- The Day Starts Early: The working day starts really early in the US. People generally reach office by 8:30 am and finish their lunch by 1 pm. People usually leave by 5:30 pm and have their dinner by 7 pm. In India the days starts off a little late and also ends late as a result of which the meal timings are usually about 2 hours ahead of the American meal timings.
- You Need A Car For Everything: In most of the American Cities, people are crazy about cars and everyone wants to own a Nice Car. One of the main reasons for this is that it isn’t easy to move around on foot or public transport. The means of public transport are very limited and it’s really not convenient to walk to any place. One of the reasons why people rent cars a lot in the US.
- The Options Will Confuse You: The US of A is a paradise for the food freak. There are just so many options available for food and drink and you would most certainly be confused.
Well, if you have any more thoughts on this then do share it with us and if you’re traveling to the US for the first time then you might want to start preparing yourself for the new way life that you’ll experience there from now on, especially the jet lag.
Delhi Planet Weekends – Laws That Create Emotions

Did you know that in Switzerland it is illegal to flush the toilet after 10 P.M. if you live in an apartment and a man may not relieve himself while standing up, after 10 P.M. Startling isn’t it. Well, things aren’t any better in Israel where picking your nose on Saturday is forbidden, now that’s a weird law alright. In the Australian state of victoria it is illegal to wear hot pink pants after mid-day sunday, now what kind of emotion does that create in your mind.
These laws are just the tip of the iceberg, there are thousands of other laws like these(but you can view the top 25 here ) and the various states of the U.S.A astonishingly contribute to more than half of them. So although we don’t realise it, the world that we live in is actually very strange and at times, quite difficult to comprehend. So what are the different kinds of emotions that you would go through if you were to look up all these strange laws. Startling, Funny, Illogical and Weird is what we could come up with, and that’s how we have categorized them. So here you go:
Startling
- In California, USA it is illegal to set a mousetrap without a hunting license (wonder what the animal right activists would say to that).
- In the city of Blythe, California a person must own at least two cows before he is permitted to wear cowboy boots in public.
- In Hong Kong, a betrayed wife is legally allowed to kill her adulterous husband, but may only do so with her bare hands.
- In San Salvador, drunk drivers can be punished by death before a firing squad.
- In the city of York,England it is legal to murder a Scotsman within the ancient city walls, but only if he is carrying a bow and arrow.
Funny
- In the English city of Liverpool it is illegal for a woman to be topless in public except as a clerk in a tropical fish store. Hmm, so what really is the favorite food of men in liverpool.
- In the Mohave County of Arizona anyone caught stealing a soap, must wash himself with it, until it’s all used up. (that’ll make sure that the guy never uses soap again.)
- In Los Angeles, California, if robbing a bank, shooting at the teller with a water gun is prohibited.
- In Australia it is illegal to dress up as batman. Now that’s a big let down for all comic book fans. Hopefully dressing up as Superman is legal.
- In Israel, if you have been maintaining an illegal radio station for five or more years, the station becomes legal.
Weird
- In Arkansas, a man has a legal right to beat his wife, but only once a month.(so what’s the legal right of the wife, the rest of the 29 days)
- In Los Angeles, California you cannot bathe two babies in the same tub at the same time.
- In Florida, unmarried women who parachute on Sundays can be jailed.
- In Boston,Massachusetts it is Illegal to take a bath unless one has been ordered by a physician to do so (now that’s really weird and smelly law).
Illogical
- In Bahrain, a male doctor may legally examine a woman’s genitals, but is forbidden from looking directly at them during the examination. He may only see their reflection in a mirror. Given the highly conservative culture in this city especially towards women, you might think that the law isn’t so illogical. The interesting part however is that in bahrain, women cannot become doctors.
- And finally, in Delhi, the Indian Capital city girls and boys have the right to vote as soon as they turn 18. While a girl can legally get married at age 18, guys can get married at age 21. However it is a legal offence to consume or purchase alcohol before you turn 25. No, it’s not because they can’t afford it before they start earning, it’s because the government hasn’t updated it’s laws for more than 9 decades now. And that essentially is the problem with all the places in the world that have these strange laws.
So the next time you wanna take revenge on your enemy or someone you dislike just send the person on a holiday to Boston,MA and then make sure to call the police when he’s taking a bath.
