IPL – Too much of a Good Thing

8 Teams, Fast Paced Cricket, Cheerleaders, The Best Cricketers In The World, New Found Camaraderie between Cricketers from different Countries, Putting India on the World Map, Glamor from the Film Industry, World Cup like enthusiasm……the list continues.

The above are just a few key-words which describe the Indian Premier League which has made for some fabulous viewing so far. However I am reminded by the old saying which says “Too Much Of A Good Thing“. Is the IPL in any way doing any harm to us? This is an open ended question, because I myself am befuddled. I do not have an answer to this question. I can only dwell on the good points of the IPL. Besides those described above here are a few more:

  1. Your Daily Dose Of Cricket: What does an average Indian television viewer need? No, not Saas-Bahu soaps. They are anyway getting really boring. Nothing beats fast paced 20-20 cricket. Nothing better than a cricket match starting every day at 8 PM in the evening, when you are just back from work and relaxing into your easy chair. The latest Television Rating Points (TRP’s) show higher ratings for the matches than for the women oriented soaps, even among women. This has moved SET MAX to the Number 1 spot across genres of television channels (SET MAX paid USD 1 Billion for 10 years television rights of the IPL)
  2. Emergence of New Indian Cricketers: Ever heard of Wriddhiman Prasanta Saha or Pinal Shah or the young crop of U-19 players Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan. Well these guys are ready for the big league and these are just some of the names I have seen play. I am sure the end of the IPL will see a lot more competition for a spot in the National Indian Cricket Team.
  3. India’s Dominance In T-20: The reigning world cup champions will benefit a lot from the IPL. I feel this would help them keep their dominance in T-20 cricket since the players are learning to manufacture shots which can fetch easy runs in T-20. The swoop shot has become a favorite of many batsmen and the ability to execute that and many more innovative shots will be critical.
  4. New Business Opportunities: IPL can be tapped to create several more business opportunities for many verticals. From Retail to travel to media, several industries will benefit from this reality show which can keep anyone on the edges of their seats.

It’s nearing 10 days since the IPL started and there is a considerable interest amongst the viewers. So even though there is confusion many a times as to which team you should root for, that’s eventually good for the game since you end up watching the Delhi Daredevils with as much interest as the Kolkata Knightriders.

Too bad Bhajji had to slap Sreesanth and create the controversy that this format did not need. Nevertheless every controversy is an opportunity to create greater interest in the concept.

What Are You Lookin At MR

Imagine that you are sitting in a train going back home after a rather bad day at work. You are in a really bad mood and the only thing on your mind is to get back home and doze off for the day. A few minutes later however, an attractive woman steps into the train and sits on the seat opposite to you. What would your reaction be …

Well, as hard as you may try not to stare at her you would end up looking at her very frequently. Now imagine being fined for looking at the pretty lady so often or even worse being imprisoned for the same. Seems too harsh to be true, doesn’t it.

In an absurd judgment in Italy on Friday, an Italian man was given a suspended jail sentence for staring too intensely at a woman sitting in front of him on a train. A judge sentenced the man in his 30s, whose name was not revealed, to 10 days in prison and a 40 euro ($63) fine after a 55-year old woman filed a complaint for sexual harassment. The two met on two separate occasions in 2005 on a commuter train going from Lecco, a town in northern Italy, to Milan. The first time, the man sat next to the woman but she felt he had moved too close for comfort. The next day, the man sat in front of the same woman and according to her complaint, stared at her for the whole journey. The two however never spoke to each other.(Source)

Now whoever once said that it a man’s world would surely be eating his words after reading this.

The Smart Way To Lose Weight – III

We are back with Part 3 of our weight loss series. You can checkout the earlier posts on this series below

We continue with our weight loss tips which were started in Part – II.

  • That’s it, I’m Done: At this point you are probably thinking to yourself, “how the hell would I reduce weight if I never diet and eat whatever I want“. Well, you would reduce weight this way, if and only if you stop eating at the right time. As we mentioned before, most people eat more than their stomach actually needs. This happens when your focus is not on your food but on something else. In a public experiment that was conducted to test this theory, people walking across the street in New York were asked to try a sample of popcorn that was a week old. The unanimous response was that the popcorns tasted “awful“. The same popcorns were then re-packaged and sold to movie goers in a popular cinema house and guess what, more than 90% of the people finished the popcorn without any major complaints. In the first case, the people were completely involved in tasting the popcorn and could easily judge that they were stale, while in the second case the movie audience was more engrossed in watching the movie and didn’t even try to sense the taste of the popcorn. Therefore the only way you would know, when to stop eating, is when you eat your food consciously and stop as soon as you feel even slightly full. An easy way to start, is to eat food alone for a week without any distractions. Try to chew each bite about 15-20 times savoring the taste. In a few days you would be amazed at the amount of food that you would be leaving, and from there on your journey towards weight loss would start.
  • Never give into temptation: Our last piece of advice is probably something you already know and yet it is the hardest thing to follow. The approach discussed by us however is much better than any of the other diets which prohibit you to eat the really good stuff. All you need to make sure is that you don’t eat when you are not hungry.

The approach talked about here has actually become really popular thanks to people like Paul McKenna and Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. Paul McKenna is a British hypnotist, and television personality. According the Sunday Times he is Britain’s best selling non-fiction author with a number of titles like I Can Make You Rich, Quit Smoking Today Without Gaining Weight and many more. McKenna discusses the approach talked about here, in his book I Can Make You Thin, which is now also a popular TV Show.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on the other hand is the founder of the international Art of Living Foundation and advocates a similar approach in his programs. So unlike the celebrity diets which work for very few people, such kind of approaches work for most of us.

We hope you enjoyed reading our series on Weight Loss. We Wish You A Healthy Life Ahead.

The Smart Way To Lose Weight – II

We are back with Part 2 of our weight loss series. Checkout Part 1 here.

Most of the highly obese and overweight people are those who in times of distress, “eat“. Such people are emotional eaters, who treat food as a way to vent out their anger, stress and other unhappy emotions. The rest of us who don’t suffer from too many emotional problems are no better. We rarely ever eat food to satisfy our hunger. Most of us eat because it is “time” to eat or because the food is free and we need to have it.

And even if you eat only when you are hungry chances are that you eat more than you should and that’s because you miss the all important signal from the only organ of your body that controls your digestion, your stomach. It may sound really amazing but the truth is that one can lose weight and keep it that way by just following some simple rules , which are:

  • Don’t Diet, Cause It’ll never work: How many times have you gone on a diet, lost some weight, felt better about yourself only to find that within a few months you are back to your normal eating habits and thus your normal weight. Some people even gain weight while dieting and starving. When we starve, diet or eat excessively less, our digestive system starts getting the wrong signals. Since you don’t feed your stomach whenever it asks for food, it tends to think that there is a famine and a shortage of food. Therefore whenever you actually do eat, it stores most of the energy in the form of fat since it knows that it would not get food everytime it asks for it. Thus in short, stints at dieting and underfeeding yourself, will never help. Even the women who do it, know that it’s a very unhealthy way of losing weight. So always make sure that you Never Diet and Never Starve.
  • Hungry, Feed Yourself: So how does one lose weight without dieting. Firstly make sure that you eat only when you are hungry. The stomach sends out hunger signals when it is in need of food and eating the right amounts of food at such times gives one a strong metabolism. Contrary to popular perception you can eat whatever you like regardless of the number of calories it contains as long as you eat the right amount at the right time. So next time, don’t just go for lunch cause it’s lunch time and your friends are having lunch. Eat when you need it.

It’s the year 2008, and the world today is almost towards the end of the 1st decade of the 21st century. These 8 years have seen tremendous progress on various fronts such as technology, health care, lifestyle, entertainment etc. Despite the many advancements there are still certain areas which haven’t seen too much progress. Most of these are related to the health care and that just goes to show to the complexity of the human body.

Today one of the biggest ailments affecting people across the world is obesity, excessive weight and other weight related problems and yet, there is no good solution to get rid of the excess fat on your body. Of course there are plenty of “so-called” solutions such dieting, Liposuction and in extreme cases Bariatric Surgery. While some of these solutions work, others don’t and even the ones that work are mostly temporary. You can’t diet or starve all your life and you can’t go in for surgery every time you put on weight. So the right way to lose weight and keep it that way is to maintain a good and healthy lifestyle.

Of course that is easier said than done. As hard as you may try, you will go through phases when your exercise regime will go for a toss and you’ll end up eating more than you want to. The end result is obvious, you’ll be back to where you started from. So what really is the solution to this vicious circle of weight gain and weight loss. Well, the answer is simple, “change the way you think about food“.
