Big Bucks, Stars, Action And A Pledge – Cricket Just Got Bigger

Well, isn’t Indian Cricket on a roll these days. First India’s amazing performance down under where they put up a great show during the test matches and then silenced critics all over the world by winning the Commonwealth Bank Series. Then Virender Sehwag’s 2nd triple century against South Africa (check here) and you soon realize that the Indian team is actually playing very well.
Well, in another few weeks India would once again be the focus of the entire Cricketing world as the much hyped and talked about Indian Premier League kicks off. The past few months have seen big names pay huge sums of money for stakes in the IPL teams, swelling the BCCI coffers in the process(it has already earned well over $1 Billion dollars through bidding, telecast rights etc ). The implementation of the whole idea, conceptualized and executed by BCCI Vice President and IPL Chairman Lalit Modi has been flawless till now and it is good to see a European football club style process being brought into cricket.
For the un-initiated the IPL, officially called the “DLF Indian Premier League“, is a Twenty20 cricket competition created by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and sanctioned by the International Cricket Council. The season is scheduled to start on 18 April 2008 and the final match will be held on 1 June 2008. The league will consist of 8 teams which are Mumbai Indians(owned by Mukesh Ambani and Reliance Industries Limited), Bangalore Royal Challengers(owned by Vijay Mallya and the UB group), Deccan Chargers(owned by Deccan Chronicle), Chennai Super Kings(owned by India Cements and N Srinivasan), Delhi DareDevils(owned by GMR Holdings), Punjab Kings(owned by Preity Zinta, Ness Wadia and others), Kolkata Knight Riders(owned by Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla Mehta and Jai Mehta) and Rajasthan Royals.
With so many big names involved and each team having some of the best players in the world (check here for more information) the IPL is set to attract tremendous viewer interest initially. Another unique feature of this tournament is that all the IPL captains have taken a pledge to maintain the ‘spirit of cricket‘ (Source). The BCCI is taking steps to ensure that the tournament would not be marred by any unpleasant incidents and the game is played in the right spirit.
Well, only time will tell whether the IPL proves to be a big hit or not as no amount of money or star power can compensate for a feeling of patriotism which this tournament would lack. After all it always feels good whenever you see something like this,
even if it happened many years ago.

WiTriCity – It’s Wireless Electricity
March 25, 2008 by krisdhingra

Imagine This: You walk into your house at the end of the day’s work. You keep your discharged cellphone on the study, open your personal laptop and start checking your personal e-mail. Within an hour your computer signals that the battery is running out. Next, you just walk over to the only switch in your house and switch it on and voila your phone, laptop, camera and any other power hungry device that you ever owned starts to get charged.
Welcome to the World of the future, a world powered by
MIT researcher Martin Soljacic and his team have shown that Wi-Tricity would someday indeed be possible by lighting a 60-watt light bulb with energy sent across a seven-foot gap. Soljacic began his search for wireless transmission several years ago after being awakened by the beeping of his uncharged cell phone. “It occurred to me that it would be so great if the thing took care of its own charging,” he said.
The system, dubbed WiTricity, takes advantage of the tendency of objects that resonate at the same frequency to pick up each other’s vibes. Just as the strings on an acoustic guitar vibrate in the presence of notes played on another guitar, so energy can be sent between a transmitter and a receiver with the same electromagnetic resonance. In its trial run, his receiver was able to use about 45% of the energy transmitted. Because the energy can only be accepted by a receiver with the same electromagnetic resonance, excess electricity is absorbed by the transmitter rather than being dispersed into the environment. Forty-five percent might not seem like much, but it’s more than has ever been sent before. At this point, he says, the system works, and simply needs to be refined. (Source)
Well, it’s been quite a while since Solijacic and his team lit a bulb wirelessly and since, there have been no new updates on this front, it seems that the guys at MIT are definitely onto something big. Well, guys we really want you to make it happen and give us a would that looks like this :

Is That A Big Idea – 2
March 19, 2008 by krisdhingra
“Is That A Big Idea“, we started with this new segment a couple of weeks back and it seems to be a pretty good concept to us. So we are back, with more innovative ideas that could become a rage in the near future.
Check them out below:
Wouldn’t it be great if you could fold your car and just park it in the smallest available free space that you see. Well, that would surely solve a lot of parking problems provided someone can manufacture a car that is small, light and foldable.
So after all the hype and hoopla about the Tata Nano, which was unveiled at the 9th Annual Auto Expo on 10th January, 2008(Checkout the DelhiPlanet exclusive coverage here), it’s time for a car that might not be as cheap as the Nano but would definitely be more useful.
What you see above is a foldable 2 seater “car“, called the City-Car. The Smart Cities Group from MIT Media Lab is currently working on 2 different designs that will save parking space and the environment. The first is a foldable electric scooter. They plan to unveil a prototype next week at the EICAM Motorcycle show in Milan. The second is the City-Car. MIT said they plan to have a working prototype to show off next year.
“We’re looking at urban personal mobility in a much more sustainable way than the private automobile provides,” says William Mitchell, director of MIT’s Smart Cities Research Group. The City Car is an Electric Car and the most innovational part of these vehicles is an omnidirectional robotic wheel. The drive motor, braking system, steering components and suspension are all housed within a sealed unit above the wheel. The lack of space between the dive system and the wheel makes the application much more flexible. For example, the car can be folded and stacked with 6 or 7 others and still fit into a traditional parking space.(Source)
So maybe the City Car is not the final solution as you can’t drive it long distances. But it should take care of your daily office commute and given the fact that one spends most of the year doing that it would be a great way to solve the global Carbon Emissions problem. Definitely a Big Idea.
The Eco – Friendly and Super Powered Pizza Delivery Service

Dave is a young guy who works part time at the local pizzeria. He is a student of arts and is a great guitar player. Not only does he attend to customers that dine in but he also delivers. Dave’s pizzeria is unique and quite different from the others. It uses electric delivery cars, uses organic and locally grown ingredients when possible and the owners also donate a small portion of their profit to hunger relief and other charities.
Hmm, quite a noble pizzeria you might say. But there is something else about this place that is unique, all it’s employees who deliver pizzas are gifted with superpowers. Yes that’s right, Dave the smart and hardworking guy transforms into the mighty and indestructible Mr.Awesome as soon he steps into his G-Mobile.
Alright, so we cooked up the character called Dave, but the rest of it is all true including the picture you see above. Galactic Pizza – Pizza With A Conscience is a Minneapolis Pizza Shop, that dresses it’s delivery folks in Superhero costumes. It’s an idea that has been implemented by Galactic Pizza’s owner Pete Bonahoom, who in his own way tries to make a difference to society while also doing his business. In addition to Captain Awesome, Galactic Pizza’s stable of delivery heroes also includes Shark Girl, Luke Pierocker (rhymes with “Skywalker”), Italian Scallion and the Veggie Avenge.
Well, Mr. Bonahoom you sure seem to be a good man and your SuperHero delivery guy concept is really cool and is surely a great idea.

One Man, One Voice, He Is The Voice Of God
March 16, 2008 by krisdhingra
He Came, He Saw and He Became: A Voice. Throughout history, man had marveled at the vast complexity of the universe. Without a single unified voice, humanity has been left searching for answers to the abnormal, now one man has the power to change that and to spread his voice across the earth to all of mankind to hear. One Man, One Voice : Don LaFontaine . (Source)
If there was ever one person who would unanimously be chosen to represent the Voice Of God it would be Don LaFontaine. If you still haven’t recognized who this guy is then probably these nicknames would help you guess, “The King of Movie Trailers”, “Mr. Voice,” “Thunder Throat”, “The Movie Voice Over Announcer Guy”, “Mr. In-A-World” . Well if you still haven’t been able to place who the Don is then try listening to the trailers of any big budget hollywood movie. The deep voice that you hear is none other than the Don himself and that as a matter of fact is his original voice.
Donald LaFontaine is a legendary voice actor famous for recording over 5,000 movie trailers, television commercials, network promotions, and video game trailers. His signature voice is both ominous and sonorous.
Don LaFontaine is a native of Duluth, Minnesota. After graduating from High School, he joined the army and eventually was stationed at Fort Meyer, Virginia, outside of Washington DC. He was assigned to the United States Army Band and Chorus as a recording engineer. After his discharge from the service, he moved to New York City where he found work at National Recording Studios as a sound engineer/editor. In 1965, a mix-up in scheduling prevented an announcer from making a session, and LaFontaine was forced to create a “scratch” narration for radio spots for the film “Gunfighters Of Casa Grande” in order to present something to the client, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. To his surprise, they bought his performance.
Since then, LaFontaine has cemented position as the “King of Voice-overs” Aside from his continuing work in the trailer industry, he has also been the voice of NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox and UPN, in addition to TNT, TBS and the Cartoon Network. By conservative estimates, he has voiced thousands of television and radio spots, including commercials for Chevrolet, Pontiac, Ford, Budweiser, McDonalds, Coke, and many other corporate sponsors. At last count, he has worked on nearly 5000 films, including appearances as the in-show announcer for the Screen Actors Guild and Academy Awards.
Well, so while sitting in that hall staring at the big screen if you ever wondered who was the guy(you may have also thought that it was a computer generated voice) who did that voice, then it’s time to bring a smile on your face cause now you know.
Below you can catch a nice video where you’ll actually get to see a behind the scenes look at Don and his work.

Weather Poetry

In the Morning, the Sun Shone
And the Chill Went Away.
We Sat By the Shore
And Enjoyed the Sunny Day.Around Noon, It Started To Rain,
Then the sleet came in
And we ran towards the shade. In the night it started to snow,
And as we walked together,
I noticed her face glow.“ThankYou For This Lovely Day,
I really love you“.
Is what I thought she meant to say.As I Lay In Bed,
And Saw Her Sleep Away.
I closed my eyes and prayed,
“O Lord, Please Let Her Live Another Day“.
Well, what you see above is a By-Product of a day when one of our team members experienced not 1, not 2, not 3 but 4 different kinds of weather phenomena in a span of a single day. If you thought that the weather was uncertain in India then you were seriously mistaken. Our friend who is currently in the United States Of America would tell you that the weather their changes as frequently as Paris Hilton’s boyfriends (Check here for the list). So if it is sunny in the morning, it could be raining in the afternoon and snowing in the night. No wonder then that the US has 24 hour dedicated weather channels and people follow weather patterns a lot here.
Unlike India where no one really cares about the weather predictions as they rarely prove to be right they are taken very seriously in the US. So if weather.com says that there would be a major winter storm at 2 pm on a wednesday, it would result in people leaving their offices early so that they don’t get caught up in the storm. Understandably so, given the fact that the Government spends millions of dollars on weather research which makes the weather predictions very accurate.
Take for instance the USWRP(US Weather Research Program), which is a partnership among several governmental agencies like the NOAA, NASA, DOE, DOT, USDA, the American Meteorological Society, the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the U.S. Navy—and the academic and commercial communities (Check here for more). The existence of such an organization illustrates the importance that the US government places on weather research.
Now what we don’t understand is the reason for such climate variations. Is it because of global warming or is it just because of the location of the US.

We are eager to know your thoughts on the poem, do drop in a few comments on what you think about it. It basically deals with the thoughts of a man who is about to lose his beloved very soon, on a day when they experience all kinds of weather.
DP Money Watch – The Mantra To Create Wealth

Prosperity, success and wealth comes from innovative ideas, initiative and endurance to stand through rough and tough times. During the last one month many investors have seen their net worth drop by as much as 40%. However success begins with the ability to see an opportunity where others see none and that is one of the mantras to create wealth. We invite the attention of our readers, friends and investors to our earlier recommendations and the prices they were recommended at. We suggest that these stocks be purchased at our old recommended prices:
- Marson Ltd: recommended in Nov 2007 at Rs. 4 it touched a high of Rs. 16.
- Facor Steel: recommended in Oct 2007 at Rs. 4 it touched a high of Rs. 18.
- Supreme Petro: recommended at Rs.24 it touched high of Rs.51. Currently buy is recommended at Rs. 23.
- Shivalik Bimetal: recommended in Aug at Rs.15 it’s price touched a high of Rs.34.
- Software Tech Group ( STG): recommended at Rs.13 touched a high of Rs. 44.
- Laffan Petro: recommended at Rs. 20 touched a high of Rs. 40.Buy is recommended at Rs. 18.
- Clutch Auto: recommended at Rs. 115 it touched high of Rs. 170.Buy is recommended at Rs. 72.
It is possible that some of the prices have still not bottomed out. However we consider it very difficult if not impossible to locate the bottom and in doing so we may miss the bus. Some experts are of the opinion that the market will take a U-turn in May 2008. So you still have a few months to see an opportunity where others see none and pick some of the under-priced stocks which will create wealth for you in 2008.

The Return Of The Neanderthal Man
March 7, 2008 by krisdhingra
Wow, that was a solid push and it comes as no surprise given the fact that Andrew Symonds ( the guy who knocks down the streaker in the video) is also an excellent rugby player. Well, Symmo as he is fondly called would probably think twice before doing something like that next time, because if the streaker wanted he could have pressed assault charges against symonds. “I think Symonds may have a real problem if the man decides to make a complaint. Symonds has no right to assault any person that enters the field. Andrew Symonds isn’t a policeman. Even a policeman must use reasonable force“. Brisbane lawyer Neil Lawler, principal of Bell Miller Solicitors, said in statement (Source).
The Times Of India in this article reports about how Garth Montgomery, the Daily Telegraph’s blog editor, compares symmo to a neanderthal. “The Indians are on to something with their Symonds obsession, they know that we have a cricketer so neanderthal that he should sleep in a cage.”
In comments that should have all of Australia sitting up, Montgomery adds: “Symonds is so prized in India that they want to take his freak show on the road and have paid a record amount for him to perform at the IPL“. Well, Symmo is sure famous for all the wrong reasons and one must really say that he is a very fortunate person given all the incidents that he has been involved in. If all of this had been done by an Indian he would have probably been banned for a long long time.
Mr. Symonds would be playing for the IPL soon and we would just like to advice him that he should take it easy when he is in India, cause there he would not be as lucky as he is otherwise.
