Gujarat based 12 year old Ashish Polyplast’s share, is a penny stock available at less than Rs. 3 (CMP Rs. 2.8) per share of Face Value 10. Its Equity Capital is Rs. 3.4 crores with a Book value of 11. The Company has a capacity of 450 tonnes of PVC Hoses/Pipes and caters to the need of agriculture, construction and infrastructure. Its Hoses/pipes ranging from a diameter of 5 mm to 50 mm and thickness of 2.5mm to 6 mm are sold under the popular brand name of Realon. The Company is now doubling its capacity and adding new products like sprinklers and drip irrigation systems which may take it to the league of Jain Irrigation Systems in the next few years.
Ashish Polyplast is an almost debt free Company, and with market capitalisation of just Rs.1 crore, it’s share appears to be highly undervalued. The Replacement cost of it’s plants having a capacity of 900 tonnes after expansion of PVC Nylon braided Hoses and Flexible PVC Hoses would atleast be Rs.10 crores.
Keeping in mind the future potential of this company and it’s existing low price a buy with a long term hold of 2-3 years is recommended.

Striving For a Fit India : The Indian Railway Weight Loss Program

Indian Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav, has in the past few years been hailed for the spectacular progress of the Indian Railways. From it’s earlier position of bankruptcy to an organization with a surplus of $2.5 bn, his rustic charm and charisma has surely worked wonders and has propelled the erstwhile cowherd’s image to that of a managment guru(read here).
The past few weeks have however seen the improving image of the railways take a beating. The degrading food quality and a freak incident where hundreds of Indian rail passengers were asked by the driver to get out and push the train, has caused Mr. Laloo to become the butt of all jokes once again. “Eat our Grain and Push our trains, the perfect receipe to losing weight. Only with the Indian Railways”; might just become it’s new marketing strategy.
The weird and interesting incident of passengers pushing the train occured in Patna after a passenger pulled the train’s emergency chain and it halted in a neutral zone, a short length of track where there is no power in the overhead wires. “In so many years of service in the railways, I have never come across such a bizarre incident,” said Deepak Kumar Jha, a spokesman for Indian Railways(Source). As if this wasn’t enough the Indian Railways today also got a bashing from the Delhi High Court for serving unhygenic food on trains, the result being that P K Goel, Managing Director, Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), was asked to go on long leave till further orders by Laloo. A new official is likely to replace him shortly(Source).
Allthough the first incident is a rarity the issue of poor food quality needs to be addressed soon. Talking about fitness, introducing yoga, aerobics and fitness sessions in the trains seems to be good idea given the fact that there are trains that ply on routes that take as much as 50 hours to reach their last stop.

Movie Review by Manish
It’s true; there are countless tales which reside in the racks of the police posts and stations, in fact the escapades and the drama which the men in uniform go through has been the inspiration of many a movies in the past as well as many a television series. So riding on one of these interesting tales is Shootout at Lokhandwala.
Shootout is Based on a True Story, an encounter in Mumbai on November 16, 1991 between Aftab Ahmad Khan’s police unit and five members of Dawood Ibrahim’s underworld gang. The problem with making a movie Based on a True Story is that people forget to read the words “Based on” and think that what is being portrayed on screen is a true story. So naturally the masala is tough to digest. But we have to remember the commercial interests of the movie as well and somehow digest the hard to believe scenes which the movie shows.
The editing of the film and the organization of the screenplay is rather confusing to the viewer. The film runs as a narrative in flash back and hence switching from flashback to the present narration should have been handled more carefully. That’s where Shootout fails to deliver a knockout punch because what could have been a rendition of a gripping tale of the never ending battle between the underworld and the police, just leaves you struggling to understand what the hell is really happening. Although the action scenes are quite good and the final 40 minutes of the film depicting the actual shootout is quite an entertainer.( The real shootout lasted for 14 hours, and unlike what is depicted in the movie, the real Khan who also makes an appearance in the film as the Police Commissioner, did ask the gangsters to surrender.)
Talking about performances, A few weeks back I was talking to a film industry insider. The conversation moved to the current star ratings and he proudly proclaimed, “Wait till you see Viveik Oberoi in Shootout at Lokhandwala, you will be transported back to his Company days”. Yes Viveik is the star of the movie, these are the kind of roles he has made his own. He’s not a romantic or a Karan Johar type of actor, he’s the brash, slang spewing, tobacco ring character. He makes his mark in this star studded film (which has about 7 scions of acting), as the brash and ruthless Maya Dolas(Rumored to be a Mechanical Engineer from IIT Mumbai).
The film also has a major suprise for movie watchers, no it’s not the 2 minute appearance of Abhishek Bachchan or the guest appearence by Rakhi Sawant , but for the first time ever, an ordinary performance by Amitabh Bachchan who fails to make his mark in this movie. His scenes are filled with over-acting, a particular scene where he tries to reprimand Arbaaz and Suneil for speaking in between looks really artificial and stupid. Off late every other movie stars the Big B and he’s really diluting his brand value by these excessive appearances. The audience expects the world from him and so, he should exercise some restraint in selecting movies.
Shootout is an entertainer, don’t go on the true story part, just go to watch a movie which highlights another interesting tale of the war between the Mumbai Police and the D-Company.

Blogging is Fun, But who was the First One
May 22, 2007 by krisdhingra
10 years, 100 million blogs and a new blog every second , yet, we still don’t know the founder of the blog. While Tim Berner’s Lee is credited as the founder of the world wide web and Vint Cerf as one of the founding fathers of the Internet. There is still no consensus on who started the first blog.
But there are a few contenders for the title of “First Blogger” . Dave Winer is one of the contenders, his website Scripting News is believed to be one of the first blogs and has been running since 1997. But Winer did not coin term “Web log”(although he founded a company called Weblogs.com which was later bought by VeriSign, read here) and claims that the first blogs were inspired by Scripting News.(Source)
While Winer did not coin the term, John Barger did and thus proclaims himself to be the father of the blog. The last contender in this race is Justin Hall, a Web diarist and online gaming expert whom The New York Times Magazine once called the “founding father of personal blogging”. But just hold on, if just talking about something can make you it’s founder then there is yet another contender for this title, a 19th Century Russian Prince by the name of Vladimir Odoevsky.
Odoevsky, was a gifted man who apart from writing philosophical books, stories for children and composing pieces of music, also wrote science fiction, trying to imagine what his country would look like in 2,500 years, in 4338. Odoevsky suggested in future there would be a kind of connection between houses that would allow people to communicate quickly and easily, the way they do now via the Internet.
Houses are connected by means of magnetic telegraphs that allow people who live far from each other to communicate, Odoevsky wrote. Even more interestingly, Odoevsky suggested every household would publish a kind of daily journal or newsletter and distribute it among selected acquaintances, a habit which Russian bloggers immediately recognized as blogging(Source).
The Blog continues to grow at a rapid rate today and has spawned a social revolution bringing to the fore thousands of information savvy Citizen Journalists(better known as CJ’s). So while it’s good to hear no evil, see no evil and speak no evil, you can always use the blog to convey what you wanna say, just like our friends below.

Circa 2011: BCCI Requests the Government for Aid
May 18, 2007 by krisdhingra

The effect of the Indian team’s pathetic show at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007(the most boring world cup ever) and the recent not so inspiring performance against Bangladesh, may turn out to be much more than just a short term dissatisfaction. How else does one explain the scenario of an India – Pakistan cricket match not finding any sponsors.
The India Daily reports here that India and Pakistan are likely to lock horns for a one day international cricket match at the neutral venue of Glasgow in Scotland in the first week of July. The astonishing part is that the BCCI is yet to rope in a sponsor for this match and the four other ODIs to be played against South Africa and Pakistan. And the deadline set for sponsors to bid has passed.(Source: The Times Of India) . Many marketing heads of companies that normally sponsor cricketing events feel that cricket is no longer going to be the money raker that it once was. A few have gone on to say, that by 2011 the BCCI would have a really tough time finding sponsors for any of it’s events.
The current picture of sports in India is not healthy at all. With cricket hogging all the limelight and money, many talented and gifted players in other sports like chess, badminton, football, athletics are not able to make a mark due to lack of sponsorship and funds. So maybe the world cup defeat and the current poor form of the cricket team might actually be good as kids would be encouraged to play other sports as they too would start to attract healthy sponsorships soon. Although the BCCI is quite a rich board, it’ll just take a few series with a low spectator turnout(empty stadiums, like one in the picture above) and the BCCI would realise it’s power is on the decline. With India hosting the 2010 Commonwealth Games and achieving healthy economic growth rates, the BCCI may even ask for the government for financial support by 2011 AD.

Arresting Corruption and Increasing the GDP, The GandhiGiri Way
Applying Gandhigiri to Modern Day Management, Gandhigiri Economics, Munnabhai’s musings on Management, highly interesting terms aren’t they. Well they are actually worthy of being taught at any one of the premier B-Schools in the country. They seem to be the need of the hour everywhere and any lectures on these topics would certainly get a bumper opening (just like Tal Ben Shahar did at Harvard, read here).
Such was the effect of Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Lage Raho Munnabhai, that people actually drew inspiration from it and started implementing it in their lives. Some notable incidents that took place were,
- Last week, dozens of people including academics, doctors and lawyers in the northern city of Lucknow marched to the office of the district administrator to give him roses after he reportedly criticized the “Gandhigiri” of some student protesters.
- In the southern city of Hyderabad, Shweta Polanki was reported to have dumped her boyfriend when he made hissing noises to catch the waiter’s attention at a restaurant — a sign of disrespect for a worker according to “Gandhigiri.”
- “Gandhigiri” also touched Babloo Srivastava, an alleged real-life mafia don, who decided to distribute dozens of roses and talk about love and peace at a Lucknow court where he was brought from jail for a hearing in one of the many cases that link him to murder, kidnapping and extortion.
Now how does all of the above relate to India’s GDP. It seems that Gandhigiri could be the cure to India’s corruption. According to a World Bank report , India ranks 47th on the list of 213 on the corruption index. If India needs to sustain it’s GDP, it should control corruption otherwise we are most likely to trip and fall headlong. Now that is a startling statistic. Startling because India’s GDP (See graphic, Courtesy: rediff.com) growth Year on Year has been 8.9% (as of Q1 06-07).

Manufacturing has streamrolled the GDP growth in this quarter, but what about Electricity, Construction and Agriculture, where there is a negative growth or actually no growth. These are the industries where corruption is still rampant. How many times have you found a road which was newly built, being reduced to tatters when the first rains strike (Reason: Sub-Standard quality of materials at standard prices) or realized the increased transmission and distribution costs in your electricity bill (Reason: Electricity theft which is becoming more prevalent).
These seem to be just a few instances but the point is that, if “Gandhigiri” is brought into practice in our daily lives, then some exponents of corruption can be negated automatically. The net result will be a more positive growth in the traditional industries and ethical consumerism. An 8.9% rise in the GDP is excellent to say the least, but maybe things would be even better if Gandhigiri is enforced in our daily life in a big way.
DP Trends – The Latest in Conception and Child Birth
May 14, 2007 by krisdhingra

Are you an expecting mother or are you close to someone who’s pregnant ? How would you feel if someone came upto you and said this,
” You know you should go in for Underwater Birthing and UC Preservation. That will ensure a less painful delivery for you and would also secure the future of your child and his siblings”. If you’re still scratching your head then read on, this article is meant for you and if not then we would surely like to hear from you.
With new and almost daily advancements in the field of medicine, one tends to lose out on certain vital breakthroughs that can make a very significant difference in one’s life. One such field is that of Child Birth and Conception. In India and most other places, majority of the people are aware of just two forms of child conception, namely Normal Delivery and Caesarean. But now there is a new form that’s emerging and it’s called underwater birthing. Also what do most people do with the Umbilical Cord that is cut at child birth, well they either throw them away or keep them as a lucky charm. Once again the latest trend is something known as Cord Banking and Preservation. DelhiPlanet explores these 2 trends as part of our effort to make you more knowledgable and better informed.
Cord Banking and Preservation
Cord blood preservation is basically about saving your child’s umbilical cord blood at birth. The process is simple, safe, and only takes a few minutes- but the benefits can last a lifetime. Why? Because the precious stem cells contained in your baby’s cord blood can be used to treat life-threatening diseases that may occur later in life. Umbilical cord blood preservation is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for collecting stem cells in a way that is painless, non-invasive, and most importantly, safe. There have been numerous instances in the recent past where stem cell transplants, from someone’s preserved cord blood has helped people beat fatal diseases like leukemia and cancer.( Check here to read about multiple accounts of such incidents)
On the flip side Cord blood banking is still in its developmental stages and there are issues in both private and public banking that need to be resolved before it will become a widely established practice. The odds of cord blood being used are extremely low and this somehow discourages couples from going in for it’s preservation. While there will continue to be some debate over this concept but one thing that can be easily agreed upon is that, it’s better to preserve the cord and cord blood than to throw it in the trash can.
If you’re an Indian and would like to know about Cord Banking then checkout LifeCell India, which is one of the few organizations in the country that offer this facility.
UnderWater Birthing
Prior to the birth of Violet (read here), underwater birthing was a concept not known in India, but things are soon going to change. Violet is the first baby to be born underwater in India, and her mother Charlotte isn’t complaining.
In UW Birthing, the mother is completely immersed in a special pool or a tub where she gives birth to her baby. The temperature of the water is adjusted to match the temperature of the mother’s body. The warm water is relaxing and eases labour by reducing the excretion of adrenaline caused by pain and fear. The water also stimulates the release of endorphins and the elasticity of the perineum is increased. These all help to result in an easier birth with fewer lacerations and tears. With increased buoyancy in the water the pregnant woman can change her position easily. In most cases, water births are shorter and less painful and few women need analgesics. The buoyancy also causes a hormonal change in the mother’s body, giving her more oxytocin (the hormone responsible for labour contractions), making her labour more efficient.
On the flip side, there is a minute risk that the baby can aspirate water if it is raised to the surface after the birth and then re-immersed. However, midwives and obstetricians are well aware of this risk and once the baby is brought to the surface the baby is placed straight on the woman’s breast to feed and not re-immersed in the water.
Finally, DelhiPlanet salutes the institution of Motherhood and extends it’s best wishes to all expecting mommies.
